Joe Biden says ‘a girl’s proper to decide on is key’

Politico on Monday printed what it calls a draft of a majority opinion written by Justice Samuel Alito that may strike down Roe v Wade. The draft was circulated in early February, in response to Politico.

The ultimate opinion has not been launched and votes and language can change earlier than opinions are formally launched. The opinion on this case isn’t anticipated to be printed till late June.

CNN has not independently confirmed the doc’s authenticity. Politico says it has authenticated the draft. A Supreme Court spokesperson declined to remark to CNN.

The Biden administration had urged the Supreme Court to uphold Roe v Wade and to invalidate the Mississippi legislation that bars most abortions after 15 weeks.

Mr Biden has stated he would search to codify Roe v Wade, and that his administration was “deeply committed” to defending entry to reproductive well being care.

Mr Biden stated that whereas “we do not know whether this draft is genuine, or whether it reflects the final decision of the Court,” he needed to clarify his administration’s stance on the circumstances earlier than the Supreme Court.

He said he changed his mind because of laws that Republican state lawmakers had enacted making access to abortions more difficult for women who cannot afford the procedure or must travel to obtain it. He said these laws were extreme and in violation of Roe v Wade.

In his statement on Tuesday, Mr Biden wrote that if the court does overturn Roe, “it should fall on our nation’s elected officers in any respect ranges of presidency to guard a girl’s proper to decide on.”

“It will fall on voters to elect pro-choice officers this November,” he said.

“At the federal stage, we are going to want extra pro-choice senators and a pro-choice majority in the home to undertake laws that codifies Roe, which I’ll work to cross and signal into legislation.”
