London restaurant given dire food hygiene rating after soil was found in its freezer


A London restaurant has been given an atrocious hygiene rating after soil was found in its freezer. La Vina Restaurant in Leadenhall Market was given a food hygiene rating of one when inspectors visited on December 6.

A City of London food hygiene report said there was evidence that there were pests at the property but it was unable to tell the scale of the problem. Inspectors took 77 photos of the dirty restaurant which show filthy work surfaces, stained equipment, damp and debris left disregarded on the floor.

Photos showed mice traps covered in brown stains and there was filthy rust in the corners of the kitchen. The report added that deliveries had been left outside the kitchen for long periods of time and there was a risk of cross-contamination.

An inspector wrote: “Although I was advised all staff had received food hygiene training it was apparent due to the conditions found at the time of my visits that they lacked knowledge and supervision.

“Given conditions found at time of [my] visit I would question if adequate cleaning was being carried out to prevent cross-contamination.”

The report instructed the restaurant to wash down surfaces and ensure that staff are fully trained.

A spokesperson for La Vina restaurant said: “A visit was undertaken by the City of London whilst closed to the general public, following 20 months of closure due to Covid restrictions and during refurbishment works.

“Following this lengthy period, a thorough refurbishment of the restaurant was completed, which identified a number of historic issues due to the nature and age of the building, whilst team members were undertaking training and final preparations for reopening were being made.

“Following the initial visit, within 24 hours, a revisit was organised and undertaken with the authority with all actions satisfactorily completed to bring the restaurant up to the high standard of health and hygiene that we pride ourselves upon.

“We look forward to seeing the updated Scores on the Doors five-star grading and report that reflects this status.”
