Post 18 snags lead late in win over Sturgis – Mitchell Republic

STURGIS — An early advantage slowly turned to a 4-4 ballgame entering the sixth inning, but Mitchell Post 18 outscored Sturgis Post 33, 5-0 across the final two frames to come away with a 9-4 victory on Thursday night.

Mitchell’s late push consisted of one run in the sixth inning and four in the seventh, the highlight of which came on a bases-clearing triple by Jonah Schmidt that gave Post 18 the five-run cushion it would see through to the end.

Seth Muth recorded three hits and scored three runs from the leadoff spot, as Jonah Schmidt, Jake Helleloid and Jace Larson each put up two hits for Mitchell. Schmidt drove in four runs, while Helleloid and Brock Sparks pushed across two runs apiece. Dylan Soulek got the win on the mound, striking out three with five walks across six innings.

Kain Peters and Evan Stroud had two hits and one run batted in each for Sturgis. Owen Cass got the start, striking out two in two innings, though Dustin Alan was credited for the loss in a relief effort that lasted 4 2/3 innings with two strikeouts and four walks.

Mitchell Post 18 (14-6) will compete in the Hladky Memorial Tournament in Gillette, Wyoming, which features five games across three days, starting with contests against Monarch, Colorado, and Gallatin Valley, Montana, on Friday.
