Which Centre Co grocery store is cheapest? Prices compared

How do prices compare at six grocery retailers in Centre County? See prices for some common items.

Grocery prices are up 13.5% nationally from last August, according to the latest U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Consumer Price Index.

Cereals and bakery products are up 16.4%, according to the federal agency, and dairy and related products are up 16.2%. Prices of non-alcoholic beverages and beverage materials have increased by 13.4%, while fruits and vegetables are 9.4% more expensive than in August 2021.

The CPI values above are not seasonally adjusted.

With grocery bills increasing, many consumers are likely looking for ways to ease costs and mitigate inflation. Here’s an item-by-item comparison of online grocery prices for Walmart, Aldi, Wegmans, Weis Markets, Giant Food Stores and Burkholder’s Country Market in Centre County.

All prices are sourced online and actual costs may vary based on when and how you buy. Aldi’s prices are from third-party InstaCart.

Aldi prices are for the location at 1790 N. Atherton St., while Wegmans prices are for the store at 345 Colonnade Blvd., and Giant prices are for the location at 255 Northland Center.

Weis Markets prices are for 1471 Martin St., and Walmart’s are for the store at 1665 N. Atherton St. Burkholder’s Country Market is at 107 Market Drive in Spring Mills.

All prices are as of Sept. 16.

Dozen eggs

A carton of a dozen eggs is $2.29 at Aldi, $2.29 at Wegmans, $2.06 at Walmart and $2.79 at Weis Markets. Giant’s eggs are $2.22 per dozen, and Burkholder’s Country Market’s are $3.29.

Loaf of white bread

A 20-ounce loaf of white bread is $1 at Walmart, $1.09 at Aldi and $1.25 at Giant. Weis Markets sells a 22-ounce loaf for $2.19, and Burkholder’s Country Market carries a 24-ounce loaf for $1.49. Wegmans sells a 22-ounce loaf for $1.29.

Gallon of milk

A gallon of 2% milk is $4.81 at Burkholder’s Country Market, $3.59 at Weis Markets, $4.51 at Walmart, $4.51 at Giant, $4.51 at Wegmans and $5.05 at Aldi.

Chicken

Giant sells boneless, skinless chicken breast for $4.99 per pound, while Burkholder’s Country Market sells it for $4.69 per pound. It’s $5.99 per pound at Weis Markets, $2.97 per pound at Walmart, $2.69 per pound at Aldi and $2.99 per pound at Wegmans.

Frozen pizza

Aldi sells a 13.8-ounce cheese pizza for $3.65, and Burkholder’s Country Market offers a 14.89-ounce sausage and pepperoni pizza for $4.19. Giant sells a 21.6-ounce cheese pizza for $4.59 regularly, but it’s currently on sale for $4. Weis Markets carries an 11.75-ounce package of french bread frozen pizza for $3.79, and Walmart sells a 13.8-ounce cheese pizza for $3.62. Wegmans has a 13.3-ounce cheese pizza for $3.49 regularly, but it’s currently on sale for $2.99.

Granola bars

Walmart sells 12 Nature Valley granola bars for $3.38, while Wegmans carries the same product for $3.29 and it’s $4.39 at Giant. Burkholder’s Country Market sells Nature Valley granola bars for $4.49, and Weis Market carries them for $3.79. Aldi sells 12 Millville brand oats and honey granola bars for $1.89.

Coffee

Giant sells a 25.4-ounce canister of Folgers coffee for $12.99, and Wegmans sells a 25.9-ounce container for $10.49. Burkholder’s Country Market carries a 25.9-ounce container of Folgers coffee for $12.99, you can get the same item for $10.24 at Walmart and $9.99 at Weis Markets. Aldi carries a 30.5-ounce canister of Beaumont ground coffee for $7.69.

What grocery store is the most popular in Pennsylvania?

Walmart is the most popular grocery store in Pennsylvania, according to the latest numbers from Safe Graph, a company that uses anonymous mobile data.

The chain had more than 3.4 million visitors recorded by Safe Graph in the commonwealth in August, and Aldi was the runner-up with 568,500 visitors.
